Securing an iPad for Kid-Friendly Use – Blocking Airplane Mode

If a child turns on Airplane Mode, it can temporarily disconnect their device from Wi-Fi and mobile data, which could circumvent parental controls like Screen Time or other restrictions managed through Family Sharing. This is because these controls typically require an active internet connection to communicate changes or enforce real-time monitoring.

How to Prevent a Child from Using Airplane Mode to Circumvent Restrictions:

Disable Control Centre on the Lock Screen:

  • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).

    • Enter your passcode.

    • Scroll to Allow Access When Locked.

    • Toggle Control Centre off.

This way, the child can’t turn on Airplane Mode or access settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc., without unlocking the device.

It is only recommended to turn the following setting on if you have a repeat offender as it will prevent access to all settings.

Use Screen Time Settings: While Screen Time doesn’t directly disable Airplane Mode, you can use it to restrict access to the Settings app, where Airplane Mode can also be toggled.

  • Steps to Restrict Access to Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Screen Time.

    • Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.

    • Enable Content & Privacy Restrictions if it’s not already on.

    • Tap Allowed Apps.

    • Disable the Settings app if necessary (note, this could prevent other important functions).

Even if Airplane Mode is activated, apps that are managed through Screen Time still follow their set limits when the device reconnects to the internet. However, during the disconnected time, tracking and restrictions might not be enforced, which is why preventing access to Airplane Mode is crucial.
